Graduate Survey to identify needs of labour market in Oman

MUSCAT: A Graduate Survey 2015 launched by the Ministry of Higher Education will focus on the output and needs of the labour market. At a press conference held to launch the 'Graduate Survey 2015' from March to April 2015, headed by Dr Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Sarmi, undersecretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, he said, "The survey of the graduates is the first step to align output and the needs of the labour market in terms of providing data that underpin the strategic plans in the field of higher education and Omanisation and sustainability of human resource capacity development." 

He explained that the survey of graduates in 2015 was a translation of the vision of the ministry supporting sustainable economic development through the rehabilitation of national human resources in various fields, which targets graduates of the academic years 2009 and 2010 and 2012 and 2013 from 62 higher education institutions in the Sultanate and the graduates of institutions of higher education outside Oman, pointing out that the target group of the survey is 35,000 graduates in the two years.

He added that the survey of graduates seeks to achieve several objectives, including the provision of information and data on a sample of graduates, their qualifications, abilities and their search for work and expertise in the field of labour, the skills they need and to know how to harmonise programmes and disciplines of higher education in general to the requirements of the labour market and the disciplines most hired, and the skills needed by graduates in field work.

The undersecretary stressed that the importance of the survey of graduates of higher education lies in it being the first of its kind in the Sultanate. It includes all graduates of higher education institutions in the Sultanate and Omani graduates of higher education institutions outside the Sultanate. Being multipurpose the survey also serves several policy developers, decision makers and higher education institutions, along with people interested in the survey such as employers and students who are expected to join higher education institutions and graduates themselves.
